Self defense isn’t a privilege, it’s a right

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today responded to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest outrage – suggesting that citizens in his city don’t need gun permits – by reminding the anti-gun rights mayor that “Self defense isn’t a privilege, it’s a right.”
Bloomberg announced on his radio program that he wants to reduce the number of people who have concealed handgun permits in the Big Apple. He told his radio audience, “If you tell me you need a gun permit, you’re telling me you don’t think the NYPD can do a good job in protecting you. Most people, I don’t see any reason why they need it.”
“There goes Mikey again,” CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb declared. “He still thinks there’s a Bill of ‘Needs’ instead of a Bill of Rights. Where did he get the arrogant notion that people need to ask him to exercise their rights, especially the right of self-defense?
“But more importantly,” he continued, “Bloomberg is fooling himself while he’s trying to fool everyone else because he knows that police cannot be everywhere, and they are typically not around when a crime is committed. Even police will admit they can’t prevent most crimes from happening.
“Bloomberg doesn’t care about any of this, of course, because he’s got around-the-clock security,” Gottlieb observed. “But we’ll pose a question to the mayor: If he thinks law enforcement does such a smashing job all the time, why did Bloomberg feel compelled to mount a vigilante sting operation earlier this year, without the knowledge of his own police department or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and go after people he claims are rogue gun dealers in five states?
“Mayor Bloomberg is a blooming idiot and a world-class hypocrite,” Gottlieb concluded. “Gun owners across the country should remember that this is what Mikey has in mind for the entire nation. He would have every law-abiding armed citizen give up their firearms for no other reason than the fact that he doesn’t think people need guns for personal protection. I thought the mayor lives in New York City, but I was wrong. He lives in La-La Land.”

For once, I agree with Bloomberg: no one needs a gun “permit” because we already have the absolute right to own and to carry any type of weapon we want, anywhere we go, in any way we see fit, without asking anyone’s permission. We have this right by virtue of being born. Period.
