When You’re Happy and You Know It

When the master is kind and the shackles don’t bind, a slave will feel fairly treated. 

That’s a broad generality and has its exceptions, but people throughout history have preferred practicalities like shelter and safety over freedom almost any day of the week as long as masters struck the right balance between being kind and demanding.  For the vast majority of people, this is a fact of human nature.  Deflating though it may be to a libertarian, the better we understand it, the better we can work with it.

My city’s rental inspection ordinance brought this to my attention.  As a city councilor I have voted against every new infringement this ordinance brings with it, and have been working on some constructive alternatives.  But those are stories for another time.  I want to tell you how citizens are reacting to the situation.

Identity crisis

My identity crisis this week was brought on by heavy-handed bureaucracy.

This is the week income taxes are due, but that wasn’t the problem. Oh, I used to get wrapped around the axle every year from January through April 15 until I found the relief of extensions.  The recorded message from the IRS said this is the last year they allow extensions. Might have to find that axle again.

Distressing as they are, federal taxes weren’t the problem this week. Nope, this week it was my city government’s heavy hand that delivered an overdose of oppression.

Now, to give space to the other side of this clash, I’ve been told that I wrongly characterize the government of my town of 10,000 as a heavy-handed bureaucracy.  So I’ll stop calling it that — I’ll try to avoid using any modifiers for the city’s functions — and leave those calls to you.
