Posted in Press Releases by R Lee Wrights on March 17th, 2004

Mark NelsonPledging to “insist on financial integrity and continue his initiatives to improve budgetary construction and reporting,” Mark Nelson announced his candidacy for the position of Treasurer of the Libertarian Party. “I was the primary architect of the current budgeting format, and the primary creator of the past two budgets,” he said, noting with some pride that: “2003 was the first year the budget was close to actual results.”

He declared his intention to “continue this level of oversight and promote strategic initiatives to make LP operations more effective and efficient.” He also promised to ensure that the newly purchased Raisers Edge database system is implemented successfully, “and that states receive the functionality they have been promised for years.” Nelson is also determined to help the Libertarian Party achieve some non-financial goals, including the “continuation of the trend to narrow our focus on politics, rather than philosophy.”

Councilors Unanimously Say “No” to Abuses Under the USA PATRIOT Act

courtesy of Kevin TumaELKO, NV — The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLU) today applauded passage of a resolution by the Elko City Council enforcing the protection of individual liberties for all residents in the face of intrusive federal actions taken since 9/11. The pro-civil liberties resolution makes Elko one of the strongest critics of the federal government’s controversial USA PATRIOT Act and initiates policies prohibiting enforcement of the law at the city level. Adopted by a unanimous vote, the city of Elko’s resolution is the second in the state of Nevada, following Elko County, and the 264th of its kind to pass in a city, county or state jurisdiction around the country. Over 46 million Americans are now covered by these resolutions across 38 states.

“It is fitting that the city of Elko, with its long and distinguished tradition of protecting civil liberties, has passed one of the strongest pro-civil liberty resolutions in the country,” said Laura Mijanovich, the Northern Nevada Coordinator of the ACLU.

Bob Sullentrup Announces for Secretary of Libertarian Party National Committee

Posted in Press Releases by R Lee Wrights on March 10th, 2004

Bob Sullentrup(March 7) St. Charles, MO - Bob Sullentrup, Missouri Libertarian Party Chair, announced today that he will seek the position of Secretary of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) at the Party’s national convention in Atlanta the last week of May.

Mr. Sullentrup is hoping to succeed outgoing secretary Steve Givot of Chicago who is retiring from the position after six years.

When asked what he expects to contribute as Secretary, he replied, “I expect to lead by example and to honor my word. The most valuable practice for an activist is to keep his commitments. I will start with my own commitment to meet the job’s expectations, particularly in getting the meeting minutes produced and distributed within two weeks of our meetings, easily within the required month. My work products will be professional, timely, and complete. In so doing, the serious and substantial undertaking to which the LNC addresses itself, that of restoring Liberty to America, will have the professional services from that office that it deserves. I’ll be especially attentive in LNC meetings to statements containing commitments expressing who is committing to doing what by what date. If we all keep our word and do what we say, we can build a party on that.”
