A Witness Behind the Scenes!
by Dennis Hayes
I was a witness to the 2002 Libertarian National Convention in Indianapolis. I was not a candidate, I was not a delegate, and hell…I was not even a Libertarian.
I was instead attempting to provide one man’s perspective on the convention for Liberty for All- Online magazine. My goal was to see and hear libertarians as they steered the party to what would be a more dynamic presence within the American political scene. I wasn’t disappointed. It is my hope that this minor travelogue will provide a glimpse of what you could not see, or if you were there, an adjunct to what you already experienced. I actually was given a press pass, but I’m still not sure that would necessarily qualify me as a reporter, so just call me a witness, for what you are about to read is my testimony.
Sunday morning Convention-goers in Indianapolis were treated to an address by Spear Lancaster, the LP nominee for Governor in Maryland, on the topic of “Selling Libertarianism.” Drawing on his 45 years of experience in sales and marketing, Spear amused the crowd with his easy-going, friendly style and presentation of the Libertarian message in a folksy, home-spun manner.
